Organization urges Washington to address the full range of militant threats as new app delivers terror alerts directly to smartphones
WASHINGTON, DC, UNITED STATES, September 18, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Today, Equipping the Persecuted released a new report documenting at least 4,216 Christians killed in Nigeria for their faith between January 1 and September 8, 2026. That represents an average of 16.8 deaths every day, or roughly one Christian killed every 86 minutes.
The true death toll is likely higher, the organization says. The report also estimates that more than 5 million Christians have been displaced and more than 600 Christian communities have been destroyed or emptied by violent religious persecution.
Equipping the Persecuted says Washington and much of the international media continue to overlook a central part of the crisis: attacks targeting Christians because of their faith. The Trump Administration’s operations against ISIS in the region only addresses part of the threat.
“America cannot continue to issue statements of concern while Christians are being slaughtered and entire communities are erased,” said Judd Saul, founder of Equipping the Persecuted. “Washington must recognize this crisis for what it is, hold the perpetrators accountable, and put American intelligence and diplomatic resources behind stopping the violence. The time for watching is over. It is time to act.”
Equipping the Persecuted is calling on Washington to confront Boko Haram and Islamist Fulani ethnic militias alongside ISIS affiliates. The organization argues that a strategy centered on ISIS will leave major perpetrators of violence against Christian communities insufficiently addressed.
THE CRISIS BY THE NUMBERS
According to Equipping the Persecuted’s report and operational records:
• 4,216 Christians killed between January 1 and September 8, 2026.
• One Christian killed approximately every 86 minutes, averaging 16.8 deaths per day.
• More than 5 million Christians displaced.
• More than 600 Christian communities were destroyed or emptied.
• More than 70 abductions and at least 35 deaths were documented during a single week in September.
• More than 200 operational terror alerts issued by the ETP and Truth Nigeria network, with a reported 93% documented accuracy rate.
IMMEDIATE POLICY ACTIONS
The report recommends several immediate policy changes, including:
• Disrupt militant networks and funding. Target the leaders, financiers, weapons suppliers, and logistical networks behind attacks, including Boko Haram, ISIS affiliates, and armed groups.
• Turn credible warnings into action. Create clear procedures for tracking threats, responding to warnings, and holding officials accountable for protecting civilians.
• Maintain diplomatic pressure on Nigeria. Keep Nigeria’s Country of Particular Concern designation in place until measurable progress is made on civilian protection, prosecutions, safe returns, and the release or rescue of religious captives.

NEW APP PUTS VITAL INFORMATION INTO PEOPLE’S HANDS
The report comes as Equipping the Persecuted launches the Truth Nigeria App, available on iOS and Android. The app delivers terror alerts directly to users’ smartphones, alongside up-to-date reporting and the interactive Nigeria Terror Tracker map.
Truth Nigeria’s terror alerts have already been credited with saving entire villages through advance warning of imminent attacks. The new Truth Nigeria App puts that lifesaving capability directly into people’s hands, sending real-time alerts the moment a credible threat is identified. Equipping the Persecuted believes the app will save more lives by getting critical information to communities before danger arrives.
