CHARLOTTE, N.C., Sept. 22, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — VitalCore today announced it has established a comprehensive healthcare operation at the newly opened Mecklenburg County Detention Center North, commonly referred to as Jail North, building the medical infrastructure and clinical workflows needed to support over 200 additional beds within Mecklenburg County’s detention system.

VitalCore worked alongside the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office to establish and staff a comprehensive healthcare operation in the facility.

Unlike a traditional transition into an existing correctional healthcare operation, VitalCore was tasked with establishing services at Detention Center North without an existing medical inventory or operational healthcare infrastructure. The company coordinated the procurement of medical equipment and supplies, recruitment and onboarding of healthcare personnel, implementation of clinical protocols, and development of daily workflows ahead of the facility’s opening.

Originally known as Jail North, the facility opened in 1994 as an adult detention center and was later converted to a juvenile detention center before closing in 2022. The newly opened facility provides over 200 additional beds for Mecklenburg County’s detention system and relieves overcrowding in the central facility to better serve its residents. The residents prioritized to move to the facility are those who are already enrolled in beneficial programs to support their return to the community.
