AI research for sales and use tax, confined to primary law and CereTax researchers’ determinations.
ALPHARETTA, GA, UNITED STATES, November 5, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — CereTax, the sales tax automation platform for complex, high-volume transactions, today announced the general availability of CereTax SmartResearch. Tax and finance teams can ask whether a product or service is taxable in a jurisdiction, under which tax, at what rate, and as of which date. Every answer starts from CereTax researchers’ determinations, cites the primary law, and tells you when the sources do not support one.
SmartResearch gives its models two sources: the determination CereTax researchers wrote and the primary law CereTax holds word for word. The models never search the open web. Models must agree on a cited answer, and a separate check tests that answer against the same sources. Answers draw on hundreds of thousands of law documents, versions of primary law, and researcher-authored determinations, so a team can see what the law said as of the date in question.
SmartResearch includes seven modules:
• Taxability Answers: cited answers to taxability questions.
• Matrix Builder: taxability matrices across products and jurisdictions, ready to export.
• Nexus: economic nexus rules by state, with the law cited.
• Tax Rates: rates from the engine that calculates the tax, down to the rooftop.
• Rate Files: tax rate files in the coverage and format each team picks, with sales and use rates in separate columns, ready to download.
• Pulse: daily briefings on legislative, court, and agency changes, set to what each user follows.
• Library: the forms and primary law text behind every citation.
AI has shaped how CereTax builds its products for years. SmartExempt, CereTax’s exemption certificate management product, was the company’s first AI product. SmartResearch is the most complete result of that work so far: the CereTax calculation engine, SmartExempt, and SmartResearch now share one set of researcher-authored content and one record behind every answer. CereTax plans to keep building on it.
“A tax answer is only as good as the law behind it,” said Mike Sanders, co-founder and CEO of CereTax. “SmartResearch keeps its AI inside the law and our researchers’ determinations, so a tax team can verify an answer before they act on it. AI has shaped how we build CereTax for years. SmartResearch is the clearest result of that work, and we are not done.”
