Homer City Generation, L.P. (“HCG”), today announced that October 2026 marks the one-year anniversary of Kiewit Power Constructors Co. (“Kiewit”) beginning work on site on the Homer City Energy Campus as the project’s Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (“EPC”) partner. Over the past year, Kiewit has led demolition and construction on the 3,200-acre site while building a workforce of more than 2,000 skilled tradespeople and contractors — a majority of whom are hired from Pennsylvania.

The announcement comes several weeks after Kiewit and Homer City Generation held the Inaugural Kiewit Cares Charity Golf Tournament at which they raised $250,000 in total for three local charities: the Indiana County Community Action Program (ICCAP), the Indiana County Endowment, and the American Cancer Society of Western Pennsylvania.

Accelerating Construction and Completing Demolition Ahead of Schedule

Kiewit began vertical construction on the site in April 2026 with the first structure to rise on the campus, and completed demolition and excavation efforts in June 2026, ahead of schedule. This work included recycling over 112,000 tons of scrap materials, excavating approximately 3 million cubic yards of material – roughly the volume of the Great Pyramid of Giza – and using advanced engineering methods such as robotics in structural demolition to ensure worker safety and operational efficiency. More recently, Kiewit oversaw the installation of the first two heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs) – which were transported to the Homer City Energy Campus beginning in September 2026 – as well as the setting of the first gas turbine on its foundation.

Scaling Local Hiring While Maintaining a Safety Record of Zero-OSHA-Recordable Incidents

All of this progress was accomplished while maintaining an exceptional safety record of zero-OSHA-recordable incidents to date – a record that speaks to Homer City Generation and Kiewit’s shared respect for safety as the number one priority throughout all aspects of the project.

At the local level, Kiewit has made significant efforts to hire locally, creating good-paying, family-sustaining jobs for Pennsylvania’s skilled tradespeople and providing hands-on training opportunities for apprentices who are working alongside experienced journeymen at the Homer City Energy Campus.

Engaging with the Local Community Through Kiewit Cares

Beyond the project site, Kiewit employees have also given their time to local community programs and partnership initiatives across Indiana County through Kiewit Cares, the company’s community outreach, charitable giving, and employee volunteer program. Most recently, these activities include renovations to Saylor, Burrell, and Josephine parks in Burrell Township, totaling more than 170 volunteer hours; renovations to Homer-Center School District’s football facilities; and the donation of hearing and eye protection to the River Valley School District Trap Club. These efforts culminated in the Inaugural Kiewit Cares Charity Golf Tournament in partnership with Homer City Generation held on September 19th.

Brian Reinhart, Vice President of Kiewit Power Constructors Co. and Project Director, commented:

“In our first year on site, the team has built strong working relationships with Pennsylvania’s union workforce and made meaningful progress on safety, quality and productivity. We’re proud to have recorded zero OSHA-recordable incidents during this period and to have contributed nearly 1,000 volunteer hours and more than $275,000 to organizations across Indiana County. We look forward to carrying that momentum through construction and delivering a facility that will create local job opportunities.”

Shawn Steffee, Business Agent for Boilermakers Local 154, commented:

“Kiewit and Homer City Generation have brought good-paying, family-sustaining jobs back to Western Pennsylvania — the kind of careers that let our members and apprentices build a future in their own community. The Homer City Energy Campus is showcasing the talent of Pennsylvania’s union workforce, and our local members are proud to play a leading role in building it. There’s no substitute for the opportunity a project like this creates, and we thank Kiewit for running it safely and efficiently while making it a model the rest of the country can follow.”

Corey Hessen, CEO of Homer City Generation, L.P., commented:

“Kiewit has been an invaluable partner in bringing the Homer City Energy Campus to life, keeping us on schedule while maintaining an exceptional safety record of zero-OSHA-recordable incidents to date — helping us honor our standards of safety and commitment to workforce wellbeing. Kiewit’s work has created real opportunities for Pennsylvania workers and their families, all while its own team has given its time generously to new community engagement initiatives across Indiana County. The quality and integrity of our workforce are making it possible for us to continue Homer City’s proud energy legacy while building this campus the right way. We look forward to another year with Kiewit as our EPC partner.”
